The American Buffalo Coin, or Gold Buffalo, is the only coin ever minted by the United States and offered to the public that is composed of pure 24k gold (.9999). Production of these coins was authorized by Congress through the Presidential Coin Act of 2005 or law 109-145, which called for the manufacture of a 24k gold coin with a face value of $50. The first American Buffalo Coins appeared the following summer.
The Presidential Coin Act of 2005 was a piece of legislation put forward by senator John E. Sununu and was signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 22 2005. It commissioned the production of several new american coins most of which depicted pictures of past american presidents. Minting 4 new coins a year, the law has lead to the creation of coins for important american leaders such as Andrew Jackson and Calvin Coolidge.
The Gold Buffalos are minted in West Point, New York, one of Americas most secure and newest Mint, dubbed the “Fort Knox of Silver”. The gold coins are limited by law to a run of 300,000 coins a year. Each coin contains one troy ounce of pure gold and has a diameter of 32.7mm, making it a bit larger than a U.S. half dollar. The coins also have a Thickness of 2.95 mm.
The design of the coins is taken from James Earle Fraser’s famous Indian Head, or Buffalo, Nickel released from 1913 through 1938, one of the most beloved and popular coins ever issued, it has become a noticeable milestone in the history of coinage. Fraser, a former student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, spent much of his young life in the american west experiencing frontier life in it’s fullest. With his nickel he succeeded in capturing the elusive beauty and dignity of the American West. This same spirit has passed on through the American Buffalo Coin. Though there are conflicting accounts, the Native American featured on the obverse, or front, of the coins is believed to be an aggregate based upon three chiefs of differing tribes: Two Moons of the Cheyenne, Big Tree of the Kiowa, and Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux. Regardless of who modeled the man in the artwork is shown to be an older man with a rough wrinkled face and traditional native american wear. Around the front of his face it reads “Liberty” and just below his neck the mint mark and year can be found. The reverse, or back, of the coins features the famous profile of a Bison described by Fraser as a "typical and shaggy specimen". The American Bison, or most commonly called the American Buffalo, is one of North America's most recognizable animals. It once roamed in massive herds but has since gone nearly extinct due to over hunting and cattle diseases. It is believed that the Bison was modeled after Black Diamond, a 1,550-pound American Bison then living at the Bronx Zoo, but according to some claims Black Diamond did not live in the Bronx Zoo but instead in the Central Park Zoo. This mystery to the conflicting accounts who Frazer used as models only adds to the excitement of this coin. Also on the Reverse, the face value, weight, and Fineness is listed below the Bison. Above the Bison it reads “United States of America”.
